Tyra Banks was born was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 4, 1973. Her parents divorced when she was six, but remain very supportive of her and her older brother, Devin. Her schoolmates and her brother often teased her, as she was tall and lean, but during her high school years, her body filled out and she generally became more attractive. Late in her high school studies she began working out and set her aims on a modeling career, determinedly overcoming criticisms of not being photogenic, and signed with the Elite agency when she was seventeen. Her personal drive and determination have continued to assist her as she rose in stature in the modeling field.
As high school came to an end, Banks was faced with a choice, attend Loyola Marymount College, or pursue a modeling career. Her mother, a professional photographer, had already helped her to put together a portrait portfolio, required for applications and for submission at interviews. Banks knew however that competition in the modeling field was very fierce; rejections were plentiful and openings scant at best. So, she decided to enroll in college and study film. Barely two weeks before the start of classes, however, fate intervened in the form of a model agent for the fall fashion shows, offering her a modeling contract for the haute couture shows in Paris. Again Banks was faced with a decision between education and career and this time she chose modeling, launching one of the biggest careers in that field.
After the show in Paris, one that allowed her to break into the industry, Banks was hired by numerous companies such as Todd Oldham, Ralph Lauren, and Chanel. Many additional modeling contracts were offered, including one from the cosmetics giant Cover Girl that offered a lucrative, long-term deal. Banks would really explode into the public eye when she began to appear on major magazine covers such as GQ, the Victoria’s Secret catalogue, and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. She was also featured in People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” issue twice (1994 and 1996). Television appearances soon followed, including a supportive role to Will Smith on the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” and frequent guest appearances on TV talk shows such as “Oprah” and “Politically Incorrect.” Rumors surfaced that she may wish at some point in her career to become a TV host, but Banks has yet to pursue such a move.
Additional aspects of her career have included film roles in John Singleton’s Higher Learning, Love and Basketball, Coyote Ugly, and the Disney television movie Life Size. She enjoys sports, particularly basketball and tennis, and works out frequently. She has authored an autobiographical work, Tyra’s Beauty, Inside and Out, and she planned to produce and star in a forthcoming movie, Thunder Dunk. Her community involvement has included “T-Zone” a summer camp in Southern California for teenage girls whose aims include building self-esteem by giving them an opportunity to share time and thoughts with other teens from varied backgrounds. She leads discussions on diversity, shared backgrounds, stereotypes, insecurities, grooming, and life styles.
Banks’s accomplishments thus far have brought her financial success and a large measure of popularity. It has also brought with it a lack of privacy. Numerous magazine articles have focused on her relationships with the numerous movie stars and sports figures she has been seen with in public, such as film director and producer John Singleton. She has asserted that she is not yet ready to make a choice, and wants to be known as an “ordinary girl next door,” who has had some successes and some disappointments. Banks looks forward to continuing to broaden her career into different fields as well as remaining a mainstay in the modeling community.
