He sold more than $90 million worth of records and appeared in several films, but he also had repeated run- ins with police on charges including assault, weapons violations, sexual assault, and probation violations. He was gunned down twice in less than two years and died in the hospital less than a week after being ambushed and shot four times. Vice President Dan Quayle blasted references to killing cops in Shakur’s 1991 album 2Pacalypse Now after a teenager who had been listening to the record killed a Texas state trooper. In 1992, Shakur was involved in a scuffle at a festival in which a 6-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet. In 1993, he was accused, but never convicted, of shooting two off-duty Atlanta police officers and also was arrested for assault and sexual assault. “In 1994,” according to the Chicago Tribune, “Shakur was arrested arraigned or tried a dozen times for a variety of assaults, parole violations and sexual assault.” That year he also was shot five times during an apparent robbery at a Manhattan recording studio.
