Orphaned as an infant, Steven Paul Jobs was adopted and grew up in Mountain View, California. He dropped out of college in 1973 and traveled to India. Returning to California, he teamed up in 1976 with Steve Wozniak, who was, like Jobs, a long-haired “hippie” with a passion for electronics. Working in Jobs’ garage, they developed the Apple, a computer that was small, cheap, and fun to use.

Within three years, they were millionaires, and Apple was one of America’s fastest-growing companies. “We started out to get a computer in the hands of everyday people, and we succeeded beyond our wildest dreams,” said Jobs. He developed the equally successful Macintosh in 1983. It was the first computer to replace typed commands with user-friendly “point-and-click” menus and icons. Jobs left Apple in 1985. He founded a software firm, NeXT, Inc., and he bought the computer-animation studio Pixar. But in 1997, Jobs returned to Apple, which had experienced declining sales. By introducing exciting new products, including the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad, Jobs brought the company back to a position of leadership in the computer industry. Meanwhile, Apple had purchased NeXT for its operating system technology, and the Walt Disney Company had bought Pixar.

On August 25, 2011, Jobs announced his resignation as chief executive officer of Apple. However, he still remained chairman of the board. He had been on medical leave since January 2011. Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004. He died on October 5, 2011.
