As a star player in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal won many honors. In 1993, he was named Rookie of the Year; and in 1996, he was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. But 2000 turned out to be the best year of all. Not only was he named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the NBA, he also achieved a cherished dream off the basketball court. In December 2000—eight years after leaving college early to join the NBA—he received his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University (LSU). “I always promised my parents that I would come back,” O’Neal said. “It took a while. But I came back.”

LSU was where “Shaq” first made a name for himself in basketball. In three years, he averaged 21.6 points and 13.5 rebounds per game; and in 1991, he was named College Player of the Year. But Shaq left LSU for the NBA’s Orlando Magic after his sophomore year. He signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996. And in 2000, it all came together for the 7-foot, 1-inch, 325-pound center. With 29.7 points per game, he was the NBA’s scoring leader. Shaq was named MVP of the regular season, co-MVP of the All-Star Game, and MVP of the playoff finals, after leading the Lakers to a 4-games-to-2 victory over the Indiana Pacers for the NBA title. The Lakers repeated as NBA champions in 2001 and 2002. Shaq was voted MVP of the playoff finals both years.

After the Lakers were defeated in the playoffs in 2003 and 2004, the team decided to trade Shaq. He began the 2004–05 season playing for the Miami Heat. In 2005–06, the star center was a key player as the Heat captured their first NBA championship. O’Neal averaged 20 points and 9.2 rebounds per game during the regular season.

O’Neal missed much of the 2006–07 season due to a knee injury. He was traded to the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster deal in early 2008. Playing in 61 games for Miami and Phoenix in 2007–08, he averaged 13.6 points per game. The Suns then went down to defeat in the first round of the playoffs. O’Neal played in 75 games for Phoenix and averaged 17.8 points per game in 2008–09. The Suns, wishing to cut their payroll, traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers after the season ended. With Cleveland for the 2009–10 season, O’Neal was showcased with the NBA’s newest star, LeBron James, and averaged 12 points per game. He played in 53 games before suffering a thumb injury in February and undergoing surgery. O’Neal returned to the lineup in April. Although the Cavaliers had the league’s best regular season record, they lost to the Boston Celtics in six games in the Eastern Conference semifinal playoffs.

Following the 2009–10 season, O’Neal became a free agent and signed a two-year agreement to play for the Celtics. With the Celtics in 2010–11, he averaged 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Injury limited his playing time to 37 games, averaging 20.3 minutes.

On June 1, 2011, O’Neal announced his retirement from the NBA on the social-networking site Twitter. He ended his 19-year career as the NBA’s fifth career scorer with 28,596 points.
