Born: April 09, 1990 in Los Angeles, California, United States

Nationality: American

Occupation: Actor

Young American actress Kristen Stewart came to international attention in 2008 when she played Bella Swan in the film Twilight, an adaptation of the popular teen novel by Stephenie Meyer. Stewart had been acting since childhood, primarily in films. Other film roles of significance included Panic Room (2002), Cold Creek Manor (2003), and Jumper (2008).

Born on April 9, 1990, in Los Angeles, California, Stewart was the daughter of John Stewart and his wife, Jules Mann-Stewart. Her father worked as a television producer, while her mother, a native of Australia, worked as a script supervisor. For a time Stewart was raised in Colorado before the family returned to Los Angeles during her childhood. She has an older brother, Cameron, and two adopted brothers, Dana and Taylor.

Launched Acting Career

Stewart’s professional acting career began when she was still a child. In 2001 she made her film debut as Sam Jennings in The Safety of Objects. The following year, Stewart landed a role in a high-profile Hollywood film, playing Sarah Altman in the melodramatic thriller Panic Room, directed by David Fincher and starring Jodie Foster as Stewart’s mother. In the film, mother and daughter must deal with a tense situation when three men break into their Manhattan brownstone. Stewart was praised by critics for her work as the diabetic young teen, with Jay Carr of the Boston Globe noting that “Stewart in fact holds her own with the grown-ups.”

After Panic Room Stewart appeared in Cold Creek Manor in 2003, and Speak and Catch That Kid in 2004. In the children’s film Catch That Kid, Stewart played Maddy, a teenage girl who robs a bank to help her ill father. While Stewart’s acting work was widely praised, the film was dismissed by critics.

Appeared in Into the Wild

As Stewart hit her mid-to-late teens, she earned roles in kids’ films like Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), as well as more challenging parts in more mature films. For example, she appeared in four films in 2007, including a supporting role in a film adaptation of Into the Wild, a nonfiction book by Jon Krakauer. Stewart played Tracy Tatro, a teenage girl who is in love with main character Christopher McCandless, a young man who grew up in privilege but rejects that lifestyle and dies living in the wild. Stewart also had a highly regarded turn in The Messengers that year.

Cast as Bella Swan

While Stewart appeared in four films released in 2008, two were high profile. One was Jumper, a high-energy science fiction film. The other was a long-awaited adaptation of the teen novel Twilight. The story focuses on tragic teen lovers. Stewart’s Bella is a human loner, new to the small Washington state village where her father lives. She becomes involved with Edward Cullen, a 108-year-old vampire. Twilight was a hit with younger moviegoers, and Stewart, who had to wear brown contact lenses because she has green eyes, received critical kudos. After Twilight, Stewart continued to take on diverse acting roles. She played Em Lewin in the well-received 1980s-era teen comedy Adventureland (2009).

In 2009 she returned as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and again the following year in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which took in $150 million at the box office during its first week. The final book in the series was written as two films. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 was slated to open July 15, 2011, in the United States, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 to reach theaters the following year.

Stewart garnered praise for portraying rocker Joan Jett in The Runaways (2010) and appeared with James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo in Welcome to the Rileys (2010), portraying a stripper. She learned to pole dance in a New Orleans strip club, dancing on the bar. She was to appear in On the Road as Marylou, set for release later in 2011, and was slated to star as Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman, opposite Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen, in 2012.

Stewart was nominated for MTV Movie Awards for best kiss twice in 2011: with Robert Pattinson and also with Taylor Lautner–who starred as werewolf Jacob Black–for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. She shared the award with Pattinson. She was nominated twice in 2010 as well, with Pattinson for The Twilight Saga: New Moon and with Dakota Fanning for The Runaways. She also won it that year with Pattinson.

Stewart, Pattinson, and Lautner were reportedly paid $12.5 million plus 2.5 percent of the gross for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and were to receive the same for the final film, due to be released in 2012. Many magazines and mainstream media sources claim Stewart and Pattinson had been in a relationship since at least 2009. Pattinson confirmed this in February of 2010 following the BAFTA Awards in London, according to People magazine. Stewart’s mother, Mann-Stewart, is directing her first film, K-11, which is scheduled for 2012 release. Stewart has said she would be among the cast.

No matter what happens with her career, Stewart appreciated the doors opened by Twilight. She told John Anderson of Long Island, New York’s Newsday, “This makes my life a lot easier in a way. I’m not going to have to say, ‘Oh, I want to do that movie so bad, but they have no money and I’m going to be too old by the time they get the money and I’m not going to be able to play the part.’ That’s not the case now–I get to do things I’m really passionate about.”
