With two multi-platinum albums bringing him numerous awards and acclaim, Kanye West has emerged as one of the foremost hip-hop artists of his generation. And his success has changed hip-hop, expanding it in terms of both the musical influences it embraces and the subject matter of its songs.
Kanye Omari West was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 8, 1977. His father Ray, a former Black Panther and a photojournalist, and his mother Donda West, an English professor, separated when West was three years old. West moved with his mother to Chicago. There he attended Polaris High School Columbia College (an art school), and Chicago State University. But he soon chose instead to follow his growing interest in producing music. He quickly made a name for himself, producing hits for such artists as Alicia Keys, Mos Def, Ludacris, and Jay-Z.
West moved to the East Coast in 2001, working all the while on his own album. It was hard going at first. West wasn’t seen as a particularly strong rapper, nor did he fit the gangster profile then dominating hip-hop. But he was a clever lyricist, had broad musical tastes that he represented through sampling and mixing, and wrote songs about political and social issues. Finally, Roc-A-Fella Records decided to take a chance on The College Dropout (2004). The album included the song “Through the Wire,” which West had recorded—despite having his jaw wired shut—just two weeks after a serious 2002 car crash in Los Angeles; other songs on the album dealt with religion (“Jesus Walks”) and materialism (“All Falls Down”). The College Dropout was a huge surprise hit, and suddenly all eyes were on West. In 2005, he was nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, winning three, including Best Rap Album for The College Dropout.
West followed up that success with Late Registration (2005). It was an instant commercial success—landing at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in its first week of release. A hit single from that album, “Gold Digger,” featured actor Jamie Foxx, while “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” dealt with the dark aspects of the diamond trade. West started his own record label called G.O.O.D. (Getting Out Our Dreams) music.
In 2006, the talented rapper won three Grammy Awards for his work on Late Registration. And in 2008, West picked up four more Grammys, including the award for best rap album for Graduation.
