Carlos Slim Helu, born on January 28, 1940 in Mexico City, is a Mexican businessman. He was ranked as the richest person in the world with a fortune of 74.0 billion dollars in the year 2011.
His father, Julian Slim Haddad (Yusef Salim Haddad was born) was a Christian Maronite from Jezzine in Lebanon. Slim’s mother, Linda Helu was a Christian Lebanese too.
Slim built his fortune through investments in the telecommunications industry. The privatization of Telmex which is the basis for Carlos Slim large fortune was carried out by so-called ‘public’ auction in December 1990 after the decree of Mexico’s then president Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Slim in consortium with other France Telecom won the auction even though there were several higher offers from foreign investors.
